This time Vibram has taken their Five Fingers in a new direction, away from running barefoot outdoors and taking barefoot into the gym. The Vibram Five Fingers Jaya range is designed purely for exercise and fitness while offering the training benefits of going barefoot.

Essentially, they’ve taken the original Vibram Five Fingers Classic, restyled it, cut the cuff a little higher for a more comfortable fit, improved the padding around the heel and developed a brand new sole unit for extra stability, grip and support. Then they made it look really pretty while being able stand up to high reps and gruelling intervals.

Technical Specs
stretch nylon upper for secure and comfortable fit
padded collar for added comfort
5.5mm EVA sole provides protection and ground feel
vibram tc1 poerformance rubber pads provide grip and durability
individual toe pockets seperate and strengtehn toes

Looks
The Jaya looks like a sleeker version of the Vibram Five Fingers Classic and looks fantastic in white, grey and pink. The black isn’t bad either. Meanwhile the Jaya LR is more subtley styled in tan, grey/white and grey/black with leek leather overlays that make them look less like a barefoot and more like a technical gym shoe.

Fit
Both fit just like the Vibram Five Fingers Classic while offering additonal padding around the heel for a softer, more secure fit. This makes them very easy to slip on and off and get a great fit straight out of the box.

Like the Treksport, the toes are kept quite close together, which tends to be more comfortable for women too. Most importantly, the cuff has been raised further up the foot than the Classics, so the shoe fits snugly without pulling on the toes.

Feel
Just like the Treksport, Vibram has sacrified flexibility in the toes to offer greater support and cushioning. There’s also a lot more cushioning in the heel, which makes them ideal for walking on hard, flat surfaces and improves balance and control for agility and power exercises.

When it comes to casual use, the Vibram Five Fingers Jaya and Jaya LR both fit very comfortably, although the individual toe pockets can be felt when walking, as can the extra padding under the forefoot, but this initial feeling quickly passes and they become very comfortable quite quickly. Otherwise, they feel very soft, lightweight and snug fitting.

What We’d Use Them For
Vibram has designed the ladies Jaya for fitness, after sport and travel. Meanwhile, we’d recommend them for gym based activities and casual wear. They’re great for things like Crossfit where you’re required to lift a variety of weights and run through obstacle courses, because these both test your stability and core strength. So by giving you a more secure and supported footing, Vibram Five Fingers Jaya would be excellent.

The Jaya and Jaya LR both look great and provide a little more stability and cushioning when walking, especially on the heel. However, these are certainly not for running in due to their limited forefoot flex and forefoot and toe padding which are designed purely for stability.

Final Thoughts
Because the Jaya and Jaya LR are quite similar to the Classics, we’d recommend them for women who are looking to try barefoot walking for the first time. The superior fit, styling and built up sole makes them very comfortable and the closer toe spacing makes them perfect for most ladies feet.

Whether you take them to the gym, out walking or choose to wear them casually is then up to you. But they’re comfortable, pretty and very supportive.

So for a few pounds more, you’re getting an improvement on the standard Vibram Five Fingers Classic: More underfoor support, a better fit, more padding around the heel and a choice of pretty styles in some more attractive colours. For many ladies these could become the new entry level Vibram Five Fingers.

The Vibram Five Fingers Jaya will be avaialble to buy from our Vibram Five Fingers UK store in Spring/Summer 2011.

4/5 – An improved ladies only model of the Vibram Five Fingers Classic with added comfort, support and fit, but sadly the Jaya and Jaya LR are not suitable for running.

Finally, we round off the week with a review of the new Vibram Five Fingers Komdo Sport. Believe us when we say “We saved the best til last!”

The original Vibram Five Fingers Bikila was named after in honour of Abebe Bikila, who won the 1960 Olympic marathon while running barefoot. Ever since its release barefoot runners everywhere have tried to get their feet in a pair, but in 2011 the Vibram Five Fingers Bikila is back as the new Vibram Five Fingers Bikila LS.

What does LS stand for? Lacing System we assume, because that’s the main feature. The Vibram Five Fingers Bikila LS comes in grey and grey/black styles with a simple pull cord lacing system for fast fitting while accomodating the wider foot or higher instep.

Technical Specs
closed speed lace system (LS) for wide feet and high insteps
Dri-Lex 2mm polyurethane insole
4mm anatomical pod outsole
superior plating protection against stone bruises
coconut active carbon fabric for natural breathability
abrasion resistant PU toe protection

Looks
You may be surprised to learn the that new Bikila LS looks quite different to the orignla Bikila. The reflective dots are in a different pattern, the colour scheme is completely different and the upper is completelty unique. But the sole remains the same.

Fit
When you slip your feet in, it’s all nice and soft inside, plenty of movement and lots of padding around the heel. Pull the drawcord tight and the whole thing hugs in around your foot while the nubuck leather upper forms a secure hold.

However, if you don’t have wide feet or a particularly high arch, then these aren’t going to work for you. It’s a real shame when the draw cord lacing works so well and fits so comfortably. But if you don’t have big feet your toes will be forced quite wide apart with too much room to wiggle and may slip out. Also if your foot arch isn’t high enough the bottom of the lacing system will dig in to your metatarsals.

We did try going down a size, but then the shoe was uncomfortably tight around the heel and ankle.

Feel
Although there are extra treads and a little more heel cushioning, the Bikila LS feels like the original Vibram Five Fingers Classic under foot.

There’s a lot of detailed feeling, which is great for controlling your feet and making sure you don’t heel strike. Many of the newer Vibram Five Finger models offer quite a bit of heel cushioning, which doesn’t really encourage you to run with the proper barefoot gait. But this provides just that little bit of extra protection as well as some additional plating against stone bruising.

What We’d Use The For
Vibram recommend that these should be used for running. But when you consider that they feel like a small step up from the Classics, they’re not bad for general sports and fitness either. However, their main focus is going to be generating forward propulsion for long distance running.

The speed lace system offers such a secure fit that it’s a shame these are only suitable for people with wide feet and/or high insteps, because they really are great for running in.

Final Thoughts
So if you have wide feet, a high instep and a desire for barefoot running and little else, then these are for you.

Barefoot running is a growing, but still, quite a small niche, so for Vibram to make a product that’s even more niche is quite surprising.

So it’s back to the standard Bikila for the majority of us, while those with wide feet can enjoy the new Bikila LS and its quick, easy and incredibly comfortable speed lace system.

3/5 – A fantastic redesign of a very comfortable, high performance Vibram Five Finger from last year -that’s not suitable for the majority of people. Still, if you’ve got wide and/or high arch feet you’ll be in heaven!

Ever tried running in Vibram Five Fingers Classics off road or in the wet? It’s difficult, because they don’t have the grippiest soles; they’re designed for running on roads and other fairly flat, dry surfaces. But not the Vibram Five Fingers Treksport!

Based on last year’s KSO Trek, then Treksport features the same high traction sole unit, but with a lightweight and sporty new style that’s incredibly comfortable while providing all the support, grip and control of the Trek.

Technical Specs
coconut active carbon upper offers natural breathability and brasion resistance
4mm EVA midsole for plating protection from stone bruising
individual toe pockets seperate and stengthen toes
lightly cleated 4mm vibram outsole for added traction on a variety of surfaces

Looks
Great looking Vibrams available in orange/black, red/black and black for the men while the womens colours include a fantastic pink/blaCK, blue/grey and black. The pink is particularly stunning!

Fit
Because the Vibram Five Fingers Treksport fits around the ankle like a regular shoe, they’re far more comfortable and don’t pull on the toes. However, this make it harder to get your foot into the shoe and your toes into the ends while the Classics are relatively easy to slip on. But once you’re feet are in, the Treksport is very snug and supportive with a soft inner lining and padding around the heel while two straps running around the back of the foot and over the arch lock your heel in place very comfortably.

The only debate was when it came to the toes. Unlike other Vibram Five Fingers, the toes are a little closter together to offer better offroad and cross country support.

For the men, this was uncomfortable at first due to the restricting toe movement. You simple can’t wiggle your toes in these. However, after extended wear, this wasn’t an issue.

For the women, who typically wear shoes that push their toes together, this was very comfortable compared to the Vibram Five Fingers Classics which spread your toes apart.

Feel
If you’re progressing up from a pair of Classics, then the sole unit is going to come as a shock -especially if you’re not off road on soft ground. While the upper is extremely soft, light and breathable, the sole feels quite heavy by comparison, but that’s because it’s fairly chunky. It’s also very firm under the forefoot and where your toes flex.

But once you get off road and onto the mud, grass and the great outdoors, the shoe totally transforms!

There’s so much grip that there’s no danger of slipping on the wettest earth and you can just power along, across the fields. The sole is fairly built up in order to offer support, balance and traction. However, it doesn’t really encourage the proper barefoot gait when the heel is so well cushioned. But some may prefer a shoe that doesn’t punish you for the occassional heelstrike.

The toes are incredibly grippy, but the great thing is that you can’t feel it. You just get this great sense of traction propelling you forward.

What We’d Use Them For
Great for serious mud and filth! We’d recommend Vibram Five Fingers Treksport shoes for someone looking to take their barefoot running off the road and into the great outdoors. We probably won’t see anyone seriously trail running in a pair of Treksport, but they’re seriously good fun.

Vibram says that the Treksport is suitable for light trekking, climbing, bouldering, running, fitness and travelling. We feel that these would be great for all manner of sports and outdoor pursuits, but where they’ll really excel is off the beaten track. So if you’re looking for a more general purpose sports model for urban environments, there are other Vibrams that do it much better, like the Komodo Sport. The Treksport is definitely suited to the great outdoors.

However, we would recommend these to women who prefer having their toes closer together, especially when the pink and black Treksport looks so fantastic.

Final Thoughts
If you live out in the country or are a real outdoors type, then these are for you. They’re perfect for all kinds of rugged rural terrains while also being suitable for general running and more urban pursuits.

Even so, there’s a big leap from the Vibram Five Fingers Classic to the Vibram Five Fingers Treksport. The Treksport is a highly engineered shoe, so it’s likely to be worn by someone who has already experienced Vibram Five Fingers -especially when it comes to getting your toes in.

That said, there’s nothing stopping a barefoot newcomer from trying on a pair and exploring the great outdoors in something more natural than a traditional brown leather hiking boot.

Vibram’s new direction with their Five Fingers range seems to be enhancing the human foot in completely new ways while proving that the toes are an incredibly important part of traction and forward propulsion.

The Vibram Five Fingers Treksport will be avaialble to buy from our Vibram Five Fingers UK store in Spring/Summer 2011.

4/5 – Great for going off road and conquering the countryside. Okay on the roads and very comfortable. However, some may have issues with the toe spacing.

See you tomorrow when we review the new Vibram Five Fingers Bilika LS running shoe!

New Balance Minimus barefoot running shoes are coming soon. New Balance Minimus preview snaps and how Vibram are monopolising the barefoot market before it starts.

Once upon a time there was a barefoot running shoe called Vibram Five Fingers. Then Christopher McDougall penned Born To Run, a book about a tribe of Mexican Indians who are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world and almost overnight the barefoot running craze began.

Vibram Five Fingers sold like hotcakes, Inov-8 developed the Inov-8 Evoskin, Merrell teamed up with Vibram to create Merrell Barefoot and now New Balance has teamed up with Vibram to produce the New Balance Minimus!

In a very lengthy interview, Katherine Petrecca from New Balance has revealed that NB Minimus is a minimalist barefoot shoes range that will cover road running, trail running, and wellness shoes. The wellness shoes will be designed for people seeking a more natural stance throughout the day, even when they’re not exercising.

She went on to talk about barefoot running in general in a lot of detail, which we won’t repeat here. But the main message is that minimalist shoes are to encourage better running form while helping to strengthen the legs and feet.

She also said that a great minimal shoe should deliver increased ground feel and control, which is what makes them so much fun to use. At FitnessFootwear.com we’re constantly running or walking in Vibram Five Fingers, so we can certainly relate to the fun side of going barefoot.

New Balance Minimus will launch officially in March of 2011
The NB Minimus collection is built on New Balance’s past experience with their MT100, WT100 and the upcoming New Balance 101 minimalist shoes. Although we’re sure that the addition of Vibram sole technology is playing a pivotal part in the development of Minimus footwear.

As you can see from the New Balance Minimus preview photos, there’s a breathable mesh material and a Vibram barefoot style sole as well as straps which wrap around the forefoot and heel, plus some laces. So we can expect to see a lightweight mesh trainer with a minimal sole.

What’s really interesting is that Vibram are now making ‘barefoot soles’ for both Merrell and New Balance. For anyone who thought that Vibram’s dominance over the barefoot market with their Five Fingers could be quashed by a big sports or outdoor brand will be sorely mistaken. In fact, by producing the soles for their competitors, Vibram have their fingers in a lot of pies and will dominate the market regardless of who comes out on top. However, Vibram seems to be keeping their ‘Five Fingers’ main anatomical feature to themselves.

Stay tuned for more news on the New Balace Minimus and any further developments in the world of barefoot running shoes!

The new Salmon Wings Sky GTX walking boots has won an Editors Choice Award from US outdoor mag Backpacker.

Magazine editor Steve Howe was enthusiastic in his review of the new Salmon Wings Sky GTX, complimenting Salomon’s latest top of the line backpacking boot as flexible, supportive and good looking.

Hoew described the Salmon Wings Sky as a hybrid runner hiking boot due to its running shoe sole package with a lot of air cushion and eva foam support before commenting on its flexible forefoot.

However, there is plenty of torsion rigidity for edging on gravel and the rear heel pad isn’t hard enough to cause blisters. Meanwhile the midfoot sectrion is narrow with a nice high arch to provide plenty of underfoot support for walking with heavy loads.

He went on to descrive the Salmon Wings Sky GTX as one of his favourite types of footwear because it’s so versatile and even suggested taking it trail running for people with weak angles.

Overall Salmon’s Wings Sky GTX boot is suitable for a wide range of people. Great for long distance back packing, even on rough terrain and provides plenty of underfoot protection so that rocks won’t inflict stone bruises on your feet. He also laced them up tight for almost ski boot like support.

“Lots to like and not much to object to”, he concluded.

With the PR only just starting for Salomon’s next big backpacking boot, it won’t be long now until the Salmon Wings Sky GTX comes to the UK and gets a spot on The Gadget Show. We’re eagerly waiting and hope they invite Brian Blessed back after his roaring review of the Salomon Cosmic 4D GTX!

Merrell has expanded their existing range of footwear while redesigning a number of firm favourites and reintroducing alternative mid cut models of last year’s best sellers. So without further ado, let’s take a look at what’s coming soon!

Great news! The North Face Hedgehog 3 will be available at FitnessFootwear.com. We loved the original North Face Hedgehog trainer and are excited about what the Hedgehog 3 has in store for us.

Simply put, Hedgehogs rock. North Face Hedgehog trainers are incredibly popular for all kinds of outdoor pursuits from hill walking to trail running. They’ve even a very comfortable casual trainer that shows your passion for the outdoors in style. Top it all off with good looks, a lightweight mesh Gore-Tex construction for breathable and waterproof comfort and you’ve got an awesome trainer that’s ready to take on the outdoors and conquer the countryside whatever the weather!

So what does the North Face Hedgehog 3 trainer have in store for us Hedgehog fans? Essentially an improvement on the existing Hedgehog trainers with improved looks, performance and technical features.

Unfortunately we don’t have a photo of them yet, so for now here’s a picture of a Hedgehog. However, we have seen them and can confirm that they’re very similar to the current range of North Face Hedgehog trainers, but with a sleeker profile, improved Hedgehog tread and a snugger fitting design around the heel. And while many trail shoes fit like running shoes, Hedgehogs have a comfy trainer like fit, giving you much more room to wiggle your toes.

We gave a pair of the orginal North Face Hedgehogs to one of our trail running friends to see how he got on with them. Richard ploughed through the thick mud and up the slipperiest slopes thanks to the extreme grip while others slipped, slid and floundered in the sludge behind him.

He also found them great for descending and even though his trainers were completely caked in mud by the end of the run, they provided excellent grip from start to finish. Meanwhile the lightweight construction ensured that even with all the mud caked on, the shoes didn’t weigh down his feet. The Gore-Tex membrane kept his feet dry too.

After a quick clean his Hedgehogs were as good as new and while many have expressed concern over the softness of the rubber sole, when running cross country in the mud, they don’t seem to wear down at all.

We’ll see how Richard gets on with a pair of the North Face Hedgehog 3 trainers as soon as we get them in. If you can’t wait for the new Hedgehogs to come out, you can checkout our full range of Hedgehog trainers here: http://www.fitnessfootwear.com/c-367-north-face-hedgehog.aspx

North Face Hedgehogs are excellent for walking and off road running or just kicking back in comfort and style. Stay tuned for more news about the latest North Face Hedgehog styles at the FitnessFootwear Blog!

The spring/summer 2011 womens Hi-Tec collection has recently been unveiled at the 2010 Outdoor Show in Friedrichshafen. The extensive new collection features 70 new models to choose from in the New Year, with a major boost to all of the popular Hi-Tec designs, with new releases incorporating the latest technology, shaving even more weight of their already ultra lightweight designs, with a host of new colour schemes.

News of the release comes on the back of the hugely successful Hi-Tec Liquid Mountaineering viral video campaign, starting off the extreme sport of running on water. Naturally you should get a pair of the latest hydrophobic Hi-Tec’s on your feet before attempting to set your own record breaking aquatic running attempt, with many of the new models liquid-mountaineering certified. The video highlights the incredible waterproofing and ultra lightweight designs of Hi-Tec shoes, keeping you light on your feet and moving quickly in all weather conditions.

Producing highly technical footwear for all off-road running and walking adventures, Hi-Tec footwear keeps you going for longer easing the effort the muscles are required to perform. No one could criticise Hi-Tec for style, producing a boot and a shoe for all tastes. Whether you prefer the classic brown leather walking boot, or a highly technical snazzy trainer, you will be spoilt for choice, and that is before the 70 new styles are released early in the New Year.

For advanced details of what the Spring / Summer 2011 has in store for lovers of the great outdoors, have a look at the new designs due at Fitness Footwear in early 2011.

Hi-Tec V-Lite Hiking

Hi-Tec is well known for their lightweight designs, which feature throughout their footwear range, however the V-Lite Hiking series offers the greatest weight saving. The hiking boot category is traditionally the realm of heavy, durable boots, offering the maximum protection for the toughest terrain and the harshest weather conditions. Hi-Tec has developed their own range of technologies to dramatically reduce the weight of their boots, keeping you light on your feet without reducing protection and support. Rather than rely on a chunky cushioned sole for cushioning and protection, Hi-Tec have developed the vertical build system, which utilises 5 layers of ultra lightweight materials to keep the weight to the bare minimum, whilst providing the highest level of protection.

The V-Lite series features lightweight and durable carbon rubber outsoles, a stiff lasting board to protect the feet on uneven and rocky terrain, a Comfort-Tec insole for an anatomically moulded fit, and a cushioned midsole for shock absorption with robust yet lightweight uppers. Next year sees the popular Altitude Ultra, Rapidtrail Ultra and Belleville mid boots remodelled, and an all new Malvern hiking boot. Constructed from waterproof suede and mesh, the mid or low cut boot offers a highly comfortable fit, a lightweight and highly breathable design and all-weather protection, with cool feminine colours with yellow and pink detail.

Hi-Tec Lite Hiking

Hi-Tec’s commitment to lightweight design sees them assess competitor brands and put their shoes to the test, to help them produce boots and shoes which are 10%-15% lighter than their nearest competitor. Over long hikes the weight saving can really be felt, keeping your legs from tiring prematurely and keeping you going for longer. V-Lite boots and shoes are highly supportive, with steel shanks for rigidity to prevent bruising on hard terrain, with a good degree of flexibility for a natural foot movement and long term comfort. The waterproof designs offer full weather protection, and offers the maximum versatility, being perfect for rugged terrain and winter walking and highly breathable for warm weather walking.

The Enviro embodies Hi-Tec’s commitment to the environment, using 50% recycled material for the moisture wicking lining, recycled rubber in the outsole, and a recycled metal shank for support. The full grain leather uppers are vegetable tanned offering an environmentally friendly boot which will leave nothing behind but your footprints. The latest V-Lite styles feature blacks, greys and browns throughout the range, offering traditional styles and colours with a modern twist and the latest technology. The Altitude is the most popular Lite hiking boot which gets a further three designs in 2011, with two brand new models in the Lynx and Montclair, with leather and mesh uppers for maximum breathability.

The Adventure Sport range features the all new Hi-Tec V-Lite Infinity, the incredibly stylish trail running shoe as featured in Hi-Tec’s Liquid Mountaineering video clip. The shoes are designed for trail running, with an ultra lightweight design, far lighter than anything we have seen here at Fitness Footwear. The uppers are incredibly thin, highly breathable, and feature ion-mask hydrophobic technology for total waterproofing. The stitching has been reduced to eliminate weak points and improve the comfort with no interior seams to avoid points of abrasion to keep blisters at bay. The Vibram rubber outsole is designed not to clog up with mud, and keeps you treading lightly in all conditions.

Whilst not to the same extreme feather light construction as the Infinity, the Nightwalk features the same technology with a more hard wearing design for long runs over tough terrain. Designed with a strobel construction for comfort and flexibility, extra support is provided by a TPU midsole for maximum stability and exceptional balance. Toe and heel bumpers add robustness and an external ESS shank gives extra support and durability Designed for all terrain running in total comfort, the shoes feature a Comfort-Tec sockliner moulded to match the natural contours of the foot, and a female specific last construction for a snug and secure fit.

Heading out into the countryside for a spot of hill walking, or going for a walk in the woods is one of life’s great pleasures, so make sure you’ve got the right shoes on your feet with our walking footwear guide.

Getting some fresh air in the lungs and a spot of healthy aerobic exercise offers many benefits to the body and will help to improve both physical and mental health. However before you head out into the great outdoors it is important that you get your footwear sorted. Whilst many modern outdoor trainers will be up to the job of keeping you cool, comfortable and well protected, most lack the support and comfort necessary for long treks, and come up short when dealing with uneven ground and highly variable terrain. If you want to be kept in perfect comfort and are keen not to let blisters and abrasions spoil your day, it’s time to invest in a high quality pair of walking boots.

What to look for in a pair of walking boots

Walking boots offer greater protection for the feet than standard shoes and trainers, with increased cushioning underfoot to help keep the muscles working efficiently to keep you walking for longer. If you head off-road you will have to walk across highly variable terrain which places an extra strain on the feet and requires suitable protection, support and cushioning. On the trail and for hill and fell walking, sharp rocks and spikes can leave the feet bruised with sharp objects capable of piercing trainers and injuring the feet. Walking shoes and boots offer the right level of protection, however many hardened walkers opt for a walking boot to give extra protection to the ankles. The padded cuff in mid boots offers extra support to prevent twisted ankles over highly uneven terrain. If you are planning on walking in all weather conditions and covering challenging terrain, a pair of robust walking boots is the perfect choice.

Lightweight construction

Whether you plan on just taking the dog for a walk or going on extended treks, find a pair of lightweight walking boots. Outdoor performance brands such as HI-TEC, Merrell, Salomon, Brasher and Berghaus construct walking boots using the latest technological advances to keep the weight of the boots down to the absolute minimum. What may seem like just a few extra grams at the start of the walk, can add up as you clock up the miles, and a lightweight design will keep you fresh on your feet for longer, helping to keep muscle fatigue at bay. A predominantly mesh upper, such as with the Merrell Moab Mid Gore Tex XCR, is ideal for most walking adventures, offering a great weight saving over heavier leather boots, yet still offers excellent protection and a highly durable construction. However for classic style, comfort and the ultimate in protection, leather walking boots are a great choice.

Breathability

One of the main complaints from walkers on long hikes is that the feet start to get hot and perspiration becomes a problem. As moisture builds up, the skin on the feet gets soft and blisters can easily form, making walking highly uncomfortable. Choose a pair of walking boots which are highly breathable with good moisture wicking properties, and your feet will be kept perfectly cool and comfortable, ensuring that blisters and abrasions will not spoil your day. Mesh uppers maximise air flow and promote the escape of moisture and steam, and moisture wicking linings in the uppers and footbed will ensure that the feet are kept perfectly dry, even on strenuous walks and long treks.

Waterproof design

With the boots able to deal with internal water, make sure that your walking boots can cope with the elements. For all weather walking, choose a pair of walking boots with a waterproof construction to let you walk in all weather conditions. Many walking boots feature Gore-Tex fabric for total weatherproofing, or in the case of HI-TEC, eVent fabric. Both of these materials are impermeable to external water, offer protection from the wind, and will not hinder breathability. Waterproof walking boots generally have an XCR or GTX notation to make it easy to tell if they feature a Gore-Tex gasket, which will keep the feet perfectly dry when the heavens open, and will deal with standing water. A bellows tongue will complete the seal so that even small streams will not stop you in your tracks. Before you buy, check to see if the boots have an anti-microbial treatment, which will prevent nasty smells taking hold and will ensure your feet are kept in a healthy environment.

Choosing a high quality pair of purpose designed walking boots from one of the major outdoor brands will assure you of the necessary support and comfort, no matter where you plan to walk. As long as the boots you are planning on buying have technology to combat each of the above factors, it will just be a case of choosing the most attractive style, however with such a large range available at Fitness Footwear, it may take you a little while to decide! If in any doubt about the best boots to buy for your walking requirements, visit FitnessFootwear.com for further details, or give our customer service hotline a call, and our staff will be happy to help you pick out the best walking boots for the job at hand.

What to look for in a pair of walking shoes

If you want to have the maximum flexibility, support and comfort for your feet, then a pair of walking shoes is the best choice. Offering a similar level of protection and comfort as walking boots, the lightweight design helps you to walk for longer and keep muscle fatigue at bay. What’s the difference between outdoor shoes and walking shoes? Not a great deal in actual fact! Most of the major outdoor brand names produce trainer styles which are ideal for walking. However there is a big difference between walking shoes and standard sports trainers. Standard sports trainers offer great support and cushioning for day to day use, but on the trail and for long walks over varied terrain many brands come up short. If you want to have the maximum protection for the feet and sufficient cushioning to get you through the longest walks and treks, a purpose designed pair of walking shoes is the best option.

Support & Cushioning

For long walks and off-road trekking, the feet are placed under increased strain and to counter this walking shoes offer exceptional support and cushioning to keep the arches of the feet well supported over difficult terrain. As the feet get tired, the muscles and ligaments stop working as efficiently, and if not correctly supported can lead to injuries. The major walking shoe manufacturers use the latest materials technology to keep the arches high and well supported to prevent the feet from getting tired. Walking shoes feature shock absorbing EVA cushioning in the heel to take the sting out of hard surfaces, and cushion late and heavy heel strikes for maximum comfort on downhill descents. Featuring the latest technology to improve the efficiency of the stride, they work in harmony with the musculature of the feet to help you go the extra mile

Lightweight Design

A lightweight construction can make all the difference to your energy levels, helping to prevent the muscles from getting fatigued, whilst keeping the shoes highly flexible. Merrell and HI-Tec are leaders in producing lightweight walking shoes, using innovative designs and highly lightweight materials in the construction of the uppers and outsoles. HI-Tec aim to shave 10-15% off competitor brands to produce ultra lightweight walking shoes, keeping you light on your feet and not adding to the weight you have to carry. Whilst all brands keep the weight down to the minimum, durability is never compromised with reinforcing leathers and suede’s to add extra robustness to the designs to ensure a long lifespan to see a good few years of use.

Waterproofing

Heading out into the countryside can leave you exposed to the elements. The wind can whip up, rain clouds can roll in, and if you are some way from home you will need to have waterproof protection for your feet. If you plan to walk in all weather conditions, a pair of waterproof walking shoes is the best option. Gore-Tex fabric offers a windproof and waterproof layer to prevent water from getting into your shoes, with many brands offering a Gore-Tex gasket for a complete seal so that even if the going gets somewhat aquatic, water will not seep in through the uppers.

Traction

Walking on earth, rock, through thick mud and back home on urban surfaces requires expert traction across the full range of surfaces. Walking shoes allow you to take all terrain in your stride, giving excellent grip on off-road surfaces with sticky rubber compounds combining expert traction on soft ground with high durability to cope with abrasive surfaces. The tread patterns in walking shoes has been designed to maximise walking speed across all terrain, with multi-directional lugs to give real bite on soft ground, and outsole designs which will not clog up with mud and add to the weight you need to carry.

Merrell, HI-TEC, Carn, North Face, Brasher and Salomon are all names which can be trusted to offer the maximum support and cushioning for long walks in comfort, with an excellent range of styles to keep you looking good, with lightweight designs capable of super heavy weight performance.

What to look for in a pair of walking sandals

In the summertime when the living is easy, the last thing you will want on your feet is a pair of walking boots. Whilst you may have invested a tidy sum in a high quality pair of boots to last you throughout the year, you really can’t beat getting some air between the toes for cool comfort on the trail and for all of your summer walking adventures. High quality walking boots and shoes from outdoor performance brands are highly breathable and lightweight for all year round walking, however for the maximum use in the summer you really can’t beat a pair of walking sandals. Fashionable designs, great support and highly comfortable footbeds will see you wearing nothing else all summer, being ideal for casual wear around the house and garden as well as for taking on the trail and all of your summer adventures.

Not all sandals are the same, and whilst there are many outdoor models on the market, most summer sandals are not up to the rigours of off-road walking. Fashion sandals, flip-flops and even robust leather sandals often lack the support and grip for off-road adventuring. Choosing the right pair of walking sandals can be a difficult choice with so many brands and models on the market, however if you follow these pointers it will help to narrow down the choice and ensure you pick a model which is up to the job at hand.

Lightweight design

You don’t want to be weighed down in the summer, so lightweight walking sandals are the order of the day, saving all important energy for walking in the heat of the summer sun. Changing over to walking sandals can save a couple of pounds in weight which can really be felt on a long walk. However, look out for the most lightweight designs which will keep you light on your feet and walking for longer between rest stops. Just because you have slimmed down your footwear, it doesn’t mean that you have to reduce the support, with the top outdoor brands adapting their technology to give a similar level of support and cushioning as their walking shoe ranges. Look for a deep heel cup and a low profile design to offer extra protection and stability, and choose a model which has instep stability supports, to prevent torque over uneven ground.

Robust construction

Whilst you may decide to change your walking habits in the summer months and opt for less exhausting hikes, wearing walking sandals does not mean you have to stay on the path well trodden. Performance walking sandals are designed to cope with pretty rough treatment, and all off-road adventures can be taken in your stride. Most walking sandals feature robust uppers, with pig suede, nubuck and leather some of the best materials to choose. The odd summer shower will not be a problem if you choose a pair of waterproof walking sandals, which will give you the maximum versatility throughout the summer. Hybrid sandals are a great choice, offering the support of a hiking shoe with the amphibious performance of a water sandal, allowing you to walk anywhere in comfort. If you want to be able to go into the water without having to take your sandals off, choose a model with quick drying uppers which are waterproof, as water resistant walking sandals are designed to cope with the occasional shower rather than full on aquatic adventures.

Protection

Whether you choose to walk through water to keep cool or prefer to stick to dry land, protection for the feet is highly important. Many walking sandals offer an open toe design with a concave sole to give an extra degree of protection to the toes, with the foot sitting low in the sandal for extra security. Whilst these models allow for maximum air flow, if you want to sure not to stub your toes, there are many walking sandals with an enclosed toe box and bumper, of which the Keen Newport and Merrell Chameleon Cargo are two of the best examples.

Multi-Surface Grip

Summer is a time for relaxing and enjoyment, and whilst rain is not so much of a problem in the summer, you can never fully rely on the British weather. A sudden summer shower can quickly turn the trail into mud, and your sandals need to have the grip and tread pattern to cope. Many walking sandals feature sticky rubber outsoles to help stick to the trail in both the wet and the dry, with razor sipped tread patterns to cope with surface water. The Merrell Chameleon Kahuna is a great multi-surface sandal with a tread pattern designed to maximise traction off road, yet function perfectly well around town. Chances are that your walking sandals will rarely leave your feet throughout the summer, so excellent cross-terrain grip is a must. Choose a model which offers a good balance of stickiness for grip, with a robust rubber compound for durability and your sandals are sure to last for a good few summers.

At FitnessFootwear.com we have an extensive range of walking sandals from the best outdoor performance brands such as Keen, Merrell, North Face, Teva and Ecco. With extensive styles and great colours, no matter where your summer adventure takes you, you can count on perfect protection, great support and pure comfort for the feet, and if you are planning on travelling abroad, a robust pair of walking sandals should be first on the list of items to pack in your suitcase.

Hi-Tec reveal their Spring/Summer 2011 collection at the 2010 Outdoor show in Friedrichshafen. FitnessFootwear.com has the biggest scoop on the latest Hi-Tec styles!

Hi-Tec have come a long way since the launch of their groundbreaking Squash shoe in 1974, building on the meteoric success to develop a range of shoes to cater to all sports, all terrain and all weather conditions. As their name suggests, they use the latest technology to create technical footwear to help you get the best possible performance, whilst offering protection, support and cushioning in the perfect balance. Hi-Tec pride themselves on bringing affordable footwear to the market, keeping the price low whilst utilising the latest technological advances to produce the most lightweight boots and shoes on the market. Not content just to shave off a few extra ounces, the Hi-Tec design brief is to shave 10%-15% off the weight of their nearest competitor.

The highly technical, super lightweight footwear now spans over 500 models worldwide, with constant innovation seeing massive redesigns each season. The Spring / Summer Collection for 2011 promises to be their best yet, with new designs of old classics, great new colour schemes, and a boosting of each of their niche footwear markets to provide even better protection for the feet. For a taste of what is to come from this legendary British outdoor footwear giant have a look at our Hi-Tec 2011 sneak preview, and check out some of the new and exciting additions to the range.

Hi-Tec V-Lite Hiking

Hi-Tec are the original lightweight boot manufacturer, designing their rugged outdoor wear from the latest technologically advanced materials to keep your load as light as possible. No Hi-Tec range better embodies this than their V-Lite hiking footwear, which is designed to keep the weight down to the bare minimum to keep you going for longer. The range features the Hi-Tec vertical build system, with 5 layers of super light materials combining into an awesome performance. The outsole is traditionally a heavy part of the boot, so Hi-Tec utilise lightweight carbon rubber, with a cushioning midsole for great shock absorption, a Stabila-Flex lasting board to give stiffness and support, a Comfort-Tec insole for maximising shock absorption at pressure points, and wrap it all together with lightweight leather and synthetic uppers.

Designed to be comfortable straight out of the box with no need to break them in, the range utilises all of Hi-Tec’s ground breaking technology to keep you in perfect comfort across all terrain. The range includes the Hi-Tec Ultra Luxe WPI, the worthy winner of this year’s Which? Magazine’s Best Buy for Walking Boots award 2010 due to its exceptional comfort fit right from the outset. Exceptional support, the lightweight design, and pure comfort made it a hands down winner with universal praise from the review panel. If you want to keep the weight down without compromising comfort and performance, the V-Lite range of shoes and mid-boots will be right up your street.

The range features traditional walking boot styles with a modern twist and the latest technology, which ensures perfect comfort and a long lifespan which will see years of use. Featuring rich full grain leather and suede for a robust and protective construction, the range is designed to offer total waterproofing for the feet, whilst being highly breathable to keep you perfectly cool and dry on the most strenuous of hikes. Inside the shoes, a moisture wicking linking helps to draw moisture away from the feet and a removable sockliner can be easily washed to keep your boots smelling as fresh as the day you bought them.

Hi-Tec Backpacking

The most technologically advanced boots in the entire Hi-Tec walking and hiking boot range are in the backpacking category. In addition to coping with abrasive and highly changeable terrain, the boots need to cope with the additional weight of a heavy pack. Walking fully laden can be exhausting work, and sees the muscles in the legs and feet tire rapidly, however Hi-Tec have developed 4:SYS technology to help compensate for the additional strain, by improving the efficiency of movement from heel to toe. 4:SYS is a dynamic motion control system exclusive to Hi-Tec footwear, and is the culmination of two years of painstaking research into motion dynamics of the foot.

By analysing the walking and running gait, Hi-Tec has developed a construction which brings more of the benefits of barefoot walking into their shoes, improving the efficiency of movement to ease the strain on the muscles and ligaments in the feet and legs. The technology offers greater stabilisation and reduces the contact time with the ground for a much more comfortable stride. From the heel strike, through the midfoot stance to the forefoot and then the push off, the transition is streamlined and efficient to keep you going for longer, with the energy from the heel strike channelled to the toe for an extremely smooth ride.

The trainers pack in the features to cope with all environments, to give the maximum possible performance and comfort, no matter where your adventure takes you.

The uppers are constructed from highly breathable and lightweight materials to maintain flexibility and keep the weight down, helping you maintain a fast pace for longer. To offer full protection from the elements, e-vent fabric is used to create an impenetrable barrier to stop external water from entering the shoes, whilst allowing moisture to escape. Moisture wicking linings speed up movement of water away from the skin, whilst Ion Mask technology ensures water is repelled exterior of the shoes. Many models feature a one-piece seamless construction to ensure they are no weak links where water and dirt can get in, for the ultimate in protection from the elements and the maximum possible comfort. Lightweight CMEVA cushioning midsoles deal with the shockwaves from walking, whilst the carbon rubber lightweight outsole gives excellent cross-surface traction. 2011 sees ten new models added to the already impressive selection, providing a shoe for all feet, all tastes and all terrain.
