Class division in modern Britain is great enough for people to continue to be defined by their clothing and accessories, with footwear a principal identity factor, according to the Guardian.
Describing products which held a popular enough appeal for the class divide to be breached and the middle classes to embrace the style as their own, Birkenstocks were highlighted as a key example.
The European brand’s simple and unpretentious style has made it a hit with the everyman and also with celebrities, which the Guardian claimed set its sales soaring.
Leading to queues all around a shoe shop in Covent Garden, the brand’s sandals were reported to have broken out of their class bracket after Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted in a pair.
“Less than 12 months later, sales of Birkenstocks were up by 500 per cent, and to this day every high-street chain is still hawking its own imitation, hoping to mop up the gap between supply and demand,” said the Guardian.
The Independent agreed about the definition-busting nature of Birkentocks, claiming that what started out as exercise sandals became “fashion items that have been widely adopted by the stylish and glamorous”.
Sandals and other footwear from the trend-setting brand can be found here at Fitness Footwear.

Birkenstock shoes are famed for their ability to surprise wearers, with the clumpy-looking style giving not only an alternative look but also an unexpectedly comfortable fit for users.
Such was the case for news site Post-Bulletin when its fashion pages featured a suede-coated model from the European brand.
Post-Bulletin said, with reference to a quirky fashion site holding the shoes: “When we think of Juicy Couture, we think of pink velour track suits and heavily embellished handbags.
“But a suede Birkenstock-style clog? We were surprised, too. We slipped our feet into the ultra-cozy slides and loved the shearling lining and gold link chain detail.”
Post-Bulletin went on to announce further innovations in footwear and wider fashion which, like the shoes sampled, contained surprises: “Now that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing metallic shoes and bags during daylight hours, it doesn’t feel like such a big leap to wear metallic clothing before sunset”.
For the most inventive innovations in shoe style, shoppers need look no further than Fitness Footwear.

Birkenstock and Merrell shoes have been hailed by a women’s interest page discussing the do’s and don’ts of toe-care.
Lamenting the less than glorious reputation of toes and the lack of care people take over them, Greater Lansing Woman’s foot advice slipped in a wholly positive reference to quality footwear companies.
“There’s not a lot of praise being offered for our southern-most appendages or their parts” said author Maureen Patzer, “unless of course you’re a Birkenstock or Merrell shoe, which provide unwavering support”.
Further foot-focused advice involved a rejection of typical female-fad pedicures, with the author apparently convinced that her choice of shoes was doing enough to keep her toes in shape.
“Did you ever notice nobody writes poems about toenails?” questioned the article, pitying the fact that such a precious few pay feet and toes the attention they deserve.
Here at Fitness Footwear, shoes are available from quality brands who take care to ensure that feet get the comfort and nurturing that they merit.

Celebrity shoe-spotting is a sport practised by many avid fashion-lovers, with a new and surprising piece of footwear style advice coming right out of the upper echelons of Holywood.
It emerged that Matt Damon took advice from pal George Clooney after the fellow Ocean’s Eleven star dropped him a call telling him to wear big.
Clooney was reported to have told Damon to wear the biggest shoes he had, but not in order to set a new fashion trend – the advice regarded Damon’s imminent imprinting of his foot onto the famous cement outside Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre.
About to join the ranks of other actors and music stars entering foot immortality, Clooney warned the younger actor to be sure to sport a big pair of shoes, in order to avoid people thinking he had small feet once the drying concrete shrunk.
Matt Damon apparently wasted no time in heeding the warning, reported to claim that “I looked through my closet and I got the biggest shoes I had; I wear an 11 but I had a 12, so I got the 12s… and George showed up wearing size 14s.”
Looking for a big shoe to wear, Damon may not have needed to exaggerate his size if wearing a pair of Birkenstock shoes.
The distinctively clumpy and solid look of the classic brand’s footwear makes it a hit with many fashion aficionados, celebrity or not.

US newspaper the Baltimore Sun this week reported a bizarre occurrence involving a 54-year-old woman, a pair of Birkenstocks and some very ineffective credit monitoring.
IT specialist Denise Stanco called a credit-monitoring service upon discovering charges she was not responsible for on her credit-card, hoping to stop the theft in its tracks.
The charges in question were by no means negligible, involving an $872 pair of Birkenstock shoes, as well as airline tickets worth more than $3,000.
However, instead of cracking down on the ambitious thief, Ms Stanco was told to file a police and fraud report, with funds in her account frozen from her usage but not in a way capable of stopping the thief’s transactions.
Credit service operators insisted that the fraudulent transactions had to be completed in order to process the complaint, serving to render Ms Stanco’s speedy action useless.
Birkenstock shoes can be purchased in all legality from Fitness Footwear, with a great range of sandals for women offering comfort and style at very reasonable prices.

Luxury department stores such as Saks and Nordstrom performed surprisingly well in August, with an 18.2 per cent monthly increase being attributed by the company to buoyant sales of women’s shoes, as well as handbags, designer apparel and fine jewellery.

Holidaying Brits escaping the inclement weather are being advised to opt for Birkenstock sandals this summer if they want to avoid long-term damage to their feet.
Tariq Khan, consultant podiatrist and deputy director at the Marigold Clinic of homeopathic podiatry endorsed the shoes in an article in the Independent.
According to Mr Khan, flip flops provide woeful levels of arch support, while stilettos and other fashionable footwear generally has a terrible impact on the health of our feet.
However, Mr Khan notes that this can be overcome by donning Birkenstock sandals, since they are specially designed to keep to the contours of your feet and in so doing ensure that adequate support is given however the wearer moves.

An Australian woman is vying to become the first woman to cross the Sahara desert alone.
Paula Constant, 33, decided to embark on her journey, which has been facilitated thanks to £20,000 of sponsorship from Birkenstock and Dove, after becoming fascinated by desert landscapes when she was a little girl.
Ms Constant’s attempt is actually her second tilt at the challenge after an initial bid collapsed after she was caught in a gale-strength sandstorm.
However, prospects for success of her latest voyage are currently much rosier, with at half of the mileage under her belt already.
She told news.com: “My feet are no problem at all. I’ve actually done this whole 4200km stretch in the one pair of Birkenstocks. I get tired but my arms are where I get sore the most, because you’re continually lifting and unpacking really heavy weight.
“I’ve got 3700km to go. In all, I have walked more than 12,000km from London. But this has never been about breaking records or being first. I think every individual needs to find success for themselves. And for me, success is succeeding at something you value: putting yourself into a challenging environment culturally, emotionally, intellectually, physically.”

US fashion designer Philip Lim has collaborated with Birkenstock on an exciting new range of shoes.
The footwear will form part of the Birkenstocks Tatami diffusion line and is set to be launched wordwide later this year.
Mr Lim, who usually specialises in high-end couture, said that the commission represented a unique and pleasurable challenge.
He told FemaleFirst: “My goal with this is to introduce the fashion flock to a series of urban, oh-so-cool old-school, but new hippie-chic sandals.”
“I’m very excited about this because I have such a personal affection for these sandals. It brings me back to my days of study and working as a retail slave to pay off my clothing habit.
“It happened out of the blue and to my wildest surprise that, out of anyone in the world, they would approach me to work on a collection with them.
“I have complete creative freedom – so far, they have not said no to anything – and they are such nice people.”

Attendees of this year’s Vancouver Folk Festival will no longer be taking part in the event’s famous opening day foot-race owing to health and safety concerns.
Since the festival begun, music fans have been taken part in a semi-official race to the stage when the gates of the venue are opened on the first day.
On account of the tendency for the crowd to wear sandals – and in a nod to the Indy 500 motor race – the event was dubbed the Birkenstock 500.
However, the open-toe challenge has now been given the boot on account of increasingly rowdy behaviour from racers.
Festival spokesperson Marnie Wilson told 680 News: “What started out as fun moved into a bit more pushing and shoving and people struggling to get to that position.
“That hasn’t been in keeping with the festival spirit. They just don’t want anybody to get hurt.”

Long the choice of summer shoe for A-List stars from Jay Z to Gwyneth Paltrow, the popularity of Birkenstock sandals among the glitterati it seems is continuing unabated. However, how much input the latest starlet to be spotted in the shoes had into her footwear choice is a matter of debate.
Either way, it comes as little surprise that when Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes were recently spotted in a park with baby Suri, the toddler’s feet were graced by a pair of spanking new white Birkenstocks.
Other stars to have recently been spotted in Birkenstock sandals include Johnny Marr, one-time guitarist with the Smiths, TV star James Nesbitt, Chris Martin of Coldplay and Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore.
Meanwhile, the shoes’ increasing popularity with fashionistas was recently underlined when top-selling women’s magazine Grazia featured the company’s rejigged Papillion Salamanca sandals in its fashion pages.
