Summer Heatwave Warning
The Department of Health has issued a warning about the dangers of a summer heatwave and has suggested tips to stay safe in the sun.
While many would expect to advise about drinking lots of water instead of beer and staying out of the midday sun, instead the Department of Health has advised us to paint our houses white and plant trees in our gardens for shade.
Excellent advice considering the cost of trees, how long it takes to paint a house and the fact that most of us live in rented flats.
So here’s the Fitness Footwear guide to surviving the heatwave, the inevitable hose pipe ban and hopefully emerging with a tan by the end of it all.
1) Sunglasses
It’s bright out there, especially when the majority of us spend our days working indoors in air conditions office blocks. The sun can damage the eyes, especially on hot and sunny days. So make sure you wear a pair of shades, not only to look cool, but for protection too.
2) Sun cream
Essential for preventing that ‘panda eyes’ look from wearing your sunglasses all day long. The British are a fair skinned race and we do burn very easily, even when the clouds are in. It’s important to know that during summer, even when you can’t see the sun, the UV rays are still penetrating the clouds and slowly cooking your skin. So make sure you constantly cover yourself in sun cream and stay out of the midday sun. There’s nothing more embarassing than going into work on a Monday morning, looking bright red after a weekend in the sun.
3) Water
Keeping a bottle of water handy is essential, especially around midday. While we’re often tempted by the refreshing taste of summer cider or a pint of lager, this is fine in moderation, so long as you keep your water levels topped up. The body sweats a lot in summer and we need to regain that water or risk becoming dehydrated.
4) Suitable Footwear
In the same way we wear lightweight clothing when its hot in order to stay cool, our feet are exactly the same. So while we typically walk around in trainers during the rest of the year, summer is the time for sandals. Not cheap rubber flip flops or Crocs, unless that’s your thing of course. But proper fashionable summer sandals like Birkenstocks or technical walking sandals which offer all the support of your favourite trainers, but with an open construction to keep your feet cool no matter how hot it gets. Just be sure to put suncream on your feet as well.
So stay safe this summer with sunglasses, suncream, plenty of water and a good pair of comfortable summer sandals. Looking for Birkenstocks or a proper pair of sandals?
